Panerai Mare Nostrum Special Edition 2010 PAM 300 Watch Review

In 2010, the Officine Panerai launched a special edition Mare Nostrum PAM 300. This is a mysterious and rare watch model of Panerai company. In 1943, Panerai supplied Mare Nostrum chronograph to the Italian Navy as standard issue for officers on deck. Since the historical reason, this watch model hasn't developed in that time. The special edition Mare Nostrum PAM 300 is an exceptional re-edition which is absolutely faithful to the main characteristics of this impressive chronograph: case, measurements, dial and production processes. Panerai Mare Nostrum Special Edition 2010 PAM 300 features a over-sized 52 mm case. It is limited in 99 pieces in total. As a part of the collections at the Officine Panerai Museum in Florence, the Panerai Mare Nostrum Special Edition 2010 PAM 300 enables creation of a new Mare Nostrum an extraordinary model from a collectors' point of view.

The 52 mm diameter case of Mare Nostrum is made of AISI 316L brushed steel. The whole case comes in a tonneau shape with especially strong lugs. However, due to the wide flat bezel with ridged edge on which, the PAM 300 looks round. Bezel and case back are both made of brushed steel. The screw-down back plate has four grooves to assist unscrewing. Unlike the original, Panerai Mare Nostrum Special Edition 2010 PAM 300 features a sapphire crystal window through which the movement can be seen. The winding crown is engraved with the inscription Mare Nostrum. Brushed steel push-buttons for the chronograph functions is at 2 and 4 o'clock.

The black dial of PAM 300 represents in two levels. The outer, upper ring bears small Arabic numerals, stick hour markers and round minute markers. The central level carries the names of the brand and model and the two subsidiary dials. Of course, the hour markers and hands are all coated with luminescent material, providing legibility even in dark place. This unique dial is protected by a 1.6 mm thick anti-reflective sapphire crystal.

Panerai Mare Nostrum Special Edition 2010 PAM 300 is animated by exclusive Panerai OP XXV calibre hand-wound mechanism. This 22 jewels movement features 12 3/4 lignes with monometallic Glucydur balance, Incabloc anti-shock device and Swan's neck regulator. It beats in 18,000 alternations per hour. It offers 55 hours power reserve. Depended on the historical use of the Mare Nostrum, the special edition PAM 251 is water resistant to 3 bar (about 30 metres), as it was originally designed for use on ships and not underwater. And at that time it was virtually impossible to make the chronographic buttons on a watch totally waterproof for any length of time.

Panerai Mare Nostrum Special Edition 2010 PAM 300 is teamed with the same colour and material as the original: military green in leather-lined fabric. However, it has a different buckle. It is larger and trapezoidal in shape, like all current models by Officine Panerai.
