Upcoming Panerai Time and Space Exhibition in Shanghai

To show the excellent tradition and history of its extraordinary fine watch-making technology, and in recognition of Galileo's achievements in science and technology, the Italian advanced watchmaker Panerai came back to its birthplace Florence and held an exhibition named "Time and Space: A Tribute to Galileo Galilei". The exhibition would be held in modern art center Ex3, date was between September 27 and October 2. In this exhibition, Panerai carefully selected the most representative watches and instruments from its HISTORIC and CONTEMPORARY series, three of them were produced to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first astronomical discovery and the astronomy-related exhibits became the focus of this exhibition.

Exhibition was divided into three sections. The first section focused on history, the exhibits were selected from Panerai museum, mainly introduced on how Panerai developed from a workshop in Florence to a preferred supplier of the Italian Royal Navy, and provided sophisticated professional equipments for them. The second area was displaying the achievements which Panerai reached in the international market after being acquired by Richemont Group in 1997.

Panerai held a "Time and Space: A Tribute to Galileo Galilei" exhibition in Florence, the exhibition area was located in modern art center Ex3 in Florence.

The newest type P.3000 manual winding movement developed by Panerai also first appeared in this exhibition. The third area was exclusively set to pay tribute to Galileo Galilei, to commemorate this creative genius who came from Italy and loved science very much. Panerai made three outstanding products with complicated functions in 2010: L'Astronomo (Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanium - 50mm), Lo Scienziato (Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramic - 48mm) and Panerai Jupiterium.

This exhibition would be moved to Shanghai, China and held there in May 2011 for two weeks. At the appointed time, watch fans from China would have the chance to appreciate these special products (L'Astronomo, Lo Scienziato and Panerai Jupiterium) up close and experience the highest-level integration of Italian design and Swiss watch-making technology.

P.3000 manual winding movement, hours, minutes, small seconds, 3-day power reserve 160 components, 21 jewels, 16½ lignes, 5.3mm thick, two barrels, 3 Hz frequency, Incabloc® shock absorber.

P.3000 was the movement that was entirely designed, developed and produced by Panerai factory, which was located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. This manual winding movement shown the ultimate watch-making technology of Panerai, it was extremely outstanding in function, stability, accuracy and long-time power reserve. P.3000 movement was 5.3mm thick, had a diameter of 16½ lignes, was imitated from the size of Panerai's traditional movement. People who were familiar with watches wouldn't difficult to find that P.3000 had the similar structure with the 3/4-plate movement: a big bridge covered most surface of the movement and there was a small bridge beside, the bridges were fixed on the base with thick screws, formed a particularly strong structure. This 21-jeweled movement had two barrels, which was more convenient to use a longer barrel spring, so the intensity could be shared more evenly and making a longer operating hours, the movement therefore had a 3-day power reserve capacity. The balance wheel of the movement was large (13.2mm), it belonged to variable inertia, there were four screws outside the circle to be used as micro-adjusting device to correct the timing frequency. The balance wheel was supported by a bridge with two fixed ends, this design was more stable than the cantilevered single bridge, its vibration frequency was 21,600 times per hour. There was an Incabloc® shock absorber near the balance wheel, free-sprung hairspring.

Panerai Jupiterium

Another two features of P.3000 movement were the polished bridges with rounded edges and the device for quickly adjusting the time: including the star wheel system with twelve adjusting points and a small spring clutch, which allowed the wearer to adjust the hour hand without affecting the activity of minute hand and the normal operation of the watch.

Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati: Production of Military Secrets

When open a new market, brands always need to remember their origin. Panerai is a top brand that appeals to a niche audience, limited production, excellent quality.

In June, Panerai opened a new store in Shanghai IFC, which was also the second store that this Italian top watch brand opened in Shanghai.

The large wall clock in that store shows an unique feature of Panerai watch in a large proportion - Sandwich Dial structure. The so-called Sandwich Dial structure referred that the middle layer that is coated with Super LumiNova luminescence is sandwiched between two identical layers (Super LumiNova is also used on hands and hour markers), this design is to ensure the markers'clearly visible in the absence of light environment.
Founded in Florence in 1860, Panerai originally supplied precise timing devices to Italian Navy, in particular designed products to meet the need of the submarine diving corps. The research projects at that time included Radiomir and Luminor watches, which has long been regarded as military secrets, until 1997, Panerai was acquired by Richemont, these watches were able to be launched in the international market. Today, Panerai is the only Italian manufacturer, it opened watch-making factory in Neuchatel in Switzerland, to research and manufacture watches and movements. Panerai global CEO Angelo Bonati accepted the newspaper's interview in the occasion of his trip to Shanghai.

21st Century: to you, what production process that was respectful of tradition is still in use? Normally how long to produce a self-movement?

Bonati: Panerai has been devoted to developing self-movement since 2002, the first self-movement P.2002 debuted at BaselWorld in 2005. Development of a self-movement usually takes 3-4 years to build, which is much shorter when compared with other watch factories. It is worth mentioning that our brand-new P.999 manual winding movement adopts Swan Neck Regulator, which is a very classic and traditional watch-making process.

21st Century: Almost every Chinese can say the name of several Swiss watch brands, we also try to calculate how much slaes contribution was made by our customers. Do you agree that the Asian market is the Noah's Ark that saved those luxury brands from difficult situation?

Bonati: You're right - the Asian market, especially China, is an important market for future development of the luxury brands. However, when open a new market, the brands need to always remember their roots. Panerai is a high-end brand that appeals to a niche audience, limited production, excellent quality. Brand image in China and Italy is completely consistent.

21st Century: Swatch Group plans to stop the supply of key parts to the opponent. Do you think Swiss watch brands are too dependent on Swatch Group? As a member of the Richemont Group, how to adhere to your independent production? What the advantages of Panerai that are different from other luxury watch brands?

Bonati: Panerai started to design self-movement 8 years ago, now there are almost 10. I do not know the status of other brands, but Panerai has made great effort to be independent, each year we put money into the work of R & D, most of the money is used to develop new movements and new material, and this is the main line of Panerai's propaganda. The origin of Panerai is very unique, this uniqueness is shown in its watch designs (created for Italian Navy, large dial) and the limited production model.

21st Century: Have you ever seen some impressive books about China? This trip, how you feel in Shanghai?

Bonati: Recently I read the Chinese novel "Water Margin ", is really fascinating. The trip in Shanghai is interesting and my interest in China is growing day by day. Expo being held now is brilliant, Shanghai offers a great development platform for luxury brands.

Hello, China - Panerai Introduced Two Special Editions for Hong Kong and Shanghai

Facing the rising "Asian Power", especially the insatiate Hong Kong and Chinese market, smart businessmen won't still hold their position and don't adopt any action, so is Panerai. Recently, Panerai added another two cities to their City Special Edition collection, they came from China, one was Hong Kong and the other was Shanghai.

In 2010, Panerai published two Special Editions to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its retailer King Fook Jewellery Group, one Special Edition looked like the same as the Luminor 1950 10 Days GMT, the symbol that distinguished it from other watches was engraved on the case back, it was the logo of King Fook Jewellery Group. This year, the case back of the Hong Kong Special Edition was engraved with Hong Kong's Bank of China. Perhaps the collectors have noticed that the watch didn't bring too much surprise: the diameter was 44mm, hour markers, small seconds subdial, hour and minute hands, as well as the date font, they were all coated with light brown SuperLumiNova. The watch equipped with P.2003 automatic movement and vintage leather strap. Only 30 pieces were available.

The Front of PAM 402 Was the Same as the Luminor 1950 10 Days GMT

The Case Back of PAM 402 Was Engraved with Bank of China

Different to Hong Kong Special Edition, the first Shanghai Special Edition was designed on the basis of Radiomir 8 Days. The watch was 45mm in case diameter and featured a black Sandwich Dial, all the elements on the dial were coated with light brown SuperLumiNova. PAM 412 Shanghai Special Edition was also fitted with vintage leather strap, the P.2002/3 manual-winding movement was entirely manufactured by Neuchâtel factory of Officine Panerai. The case back of PAM 412 was engraved with Shanghai Oriental Pearl TV Tower, a special gift dedicated to Shanghai.

The other two Special Edition which Panerai made for Hong Kong and Shanghai adopted Luminor Marina case and 44mm in diameter. The only difference was that the case back was engraved with skylines of each city. The two watches featured classic black dial, stick and Arabic hour markers, as well as the hands and the printings on the dial all coated with light brown SuperLumiNova. Besides the "LUMINOR MARINA" and "PANERAI" words, the dial was also decorated with a torpedo: the frogmen of Italian Royal Navy exactly wore this watch while implementing the historic missions, this glorious history had been well-known all over the world before Panerai's cooperation with Stallone and Ferrari. OP II manual-winding movement was equipped in them. Hong Kong Special Edition was published in a limited number of 200, while the Shanghai's was 150.

As the people across Asia have a growing interest in the wrist watches, in future, maybe there will be more and more famous brands, such as Panerai, Breitling and others to publish special editions for Asian cities.
