Panerai 2003 New Models
Since its foundation, Panerai has been dedicated to creating the products with superior excellence. Radiomir Panerai, which was the first Panerai watch, came in 1938 and imediately shown extraordinary performance, it passed military's most stringent waterproof standards. Since then, Panerai has been in conformance with the spirit of pursuit of excellence, established the qualities of reliability, high-tech and waterproof which their products were advertised.
Today, waterproofing was the basic performance which a watch should have, but not the case in the early twentieth century. The concept that the body and movement of the watch should be waterproof has not risen until the 1930s. However, Panerai has the honour to take the lead for designing military professional diving watches that could be used extreme conditions. The spirit of pursuing quality and technical research and development has never changed for Panerai. In fact, the 300-meter waterproofing of Panerai watches and other reliability-related standards even became the reference frame of other brands in watch-making.
And now into the 21th century, to maintain its consistent quality, Panerai Contemporary Collection were all equipped with high-quality manual or automatic winding movement, which has passed C.O.S.C. test to ensure the reliability, stability and accuracy.
In 2003, at the 13th SIHH, Panerai unveiled their newly produced watches, including the Luminor Marina Tantalium 44mm, Radiomir Chrono 44mm, Luminor Chrono 44mm and Luminor GMT 40mm, they once again proven the spirit of being uniform and loyal to tradition, and created a brand image - to establish high-quality sports watches.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Chrono Monopulsante Left-handed Titanium Watch
In the history of Panerai, left-handed watch first appeared in the early 1940s. The first generation of left-handed watches were design for Italian Navy commandos, the crown and crown guard were positioned on the left side of the case. Until now, these watches have become extremely rare, and collectors competed against each other to collect them.
Commandos carried a set of equipments such as compass and depth gauge, which probably proven the existence of these watches. Because the commandos had to wear the equipments on their left wrist, thus the watch had to be designed to wear on the right hand.
The uniqueness of the new Luminor 1950 Chrono Monopulsante Left-handed 8 Days Titanium 44mm lies in its history. This special edition Panerai watch is equipped with P.2004/9 movement, this Monopulsante chronograph movement is entirely designed and manufactured by Panerai factory located in Neuchâtel.
P.2004/9 manual winding movement has three barrels and provides 8-day power reserve. In addition, it has seconds zero-reset device, so you can adjust the time more precisely. In the mechanical structure, this movement is also equipped with column-wheel and vertical clutch, which are two necessary devices for outstanding chronograph movement.
The 44mm Luminor 1950 case is made of brushed titanium, coupled with polished bezel and sapphire crystal glass case back, thus you can appreciate the details of the delicate movement, through the indicator on the plate, you can clearly read the power reserve.
Cylindrical button is at 2 o'clock position, the opposite side of the crown, this button controls the chronograph function: start, stop, reset. The crown guard and the buckle of the brown leather strap is brushed titanium made.
Brown Sandwich Dial matchs classic Panerai large Arabic numerals and hour markers, there are also small seconds subdial and minutes register on the dial. In history, sandwiched structure came up in order to make the dial still have good readability in poor light condition.
Sandwich Dial consists of two overlapped discs, the middle luminous coating makes the upper Arabic numbers and hour markers can be identify clearly. The dial is printed with "Luminor Panerai" and "8 DAYS" words, which mean 8-day power reserve of the watch.
Luminor 1950 Chrono Monopulsante Left-handed 8 Days Titanium 44mm PAM 345 is waterproof to 10atm(100 meters), this special edition is produced limitedly to 150 pieces.

Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days 47mm Review
In this year's SIHH, we can clear know the trend of this year from the models was launched by various factory, one is simple and prctical. Though in the past few years, Swiss plants were chasing for the complex watches, in fact every brand value was built up on comsumer trust. Many fancy and easily broken super complex watch, will not improve the brand image, it is often short-lived, I think most of users can easily find out some failed cases. In the Geneva SIHH venue, I saw Panerai introduced P.3000 manual winding movement, meanwhile used on several special models, I think, Panerai has filled the final piece of the puzzle. In 2010 Panerai luanched P.999 manual winding movement I think so, as its size is slightly thinner and mini(diameter 27.4, thickness 3.4mm), thus cannot put the P.999 into the 44mm case diameter watch. In this way, are Panerai continue to push ETA 6497-2 as its subsidiary seconds main movement? But this problem soon solved by the relwased of P.3000 manual winding movement.
This year Panerai five new models all adopted the P.3000 movement, which show the factory's reliance on P.3000. This time we introduce PAM00372, this is the most easily start model among the five models. This Luminor 1950 3 Days 47mm watch, though belong to LUminor series, fans familiar with Panerai can find out the case shape is quite different with the general Luminor. In fact, Panerai factory in order to improve the waterproof performance of Radiomir case, Luminor case come into being. Luminor case added fastening rod crown guard, both protection of the crown and substantial increase the waterproof performance. What's more, it adopted large and straight lugs instead of welded Radiomir case's line lugs. In the following days Luminor watches gradually evolving into a modern masculine, thick case model. Thus the appearance of PAM 372, is the fist generation model of former luminor models, so you probably identify this model, combined with Radiomir iconic round cushion-shaped case lines, and Luminor crown guard and lugs design. Although this design of Panerai is still the frist time in recent years, it is also directly follows the design of prototypes watches.
PAM 372 not only is loyal to present the past case style, but also in other small details, still follow the original design. Plexiglas® glass face(thickness 3mm), it is the most frequently used material by various watch factories before the age of 1970. Because at that time sapphire cystal material hasn't been developed, but the general glass materials were so easy to break, thus Plexiglas® became the mainstream material. This kind of glass material has good flexibility, so will not so easily borken by impact, but the drawback is easy to scratch the surface if use for a long time. However, it can return to the original bright by polished. In addition, Panerai PAM 373, 376 and 379 also adopted this material. About the dial, still continue to use the traditional sandwich design, there are light brown luminous material between the upper and bottom layers, in dark place, can easily perfor this function. In addition, the word "Luminor Panerai" adopted the early font engraved on the dial instead of printed.
One big feature of this watch is used P.3000 manual winding movement. We can through the screw-down sapphire crystal case back appreciate the movement, the size is alarming, according to the original data, the diameter is 16¾ lignes, thickness 4.5mm almost the same. But the P.3000 movement has double hairspring boxes, power reserve to 72 hours, longer than the ETA 6497-2's 56 power reserve. You can know the excellent design by operating the crown, because first I think this movement has the same function of ETA 6497-2, but when pull out the crown to adjust time find out that, it has two function: one is quickly adjust short hour hand, the other is adjust time. One brand officer revealed, this movement will added with GMT function, become a full range of manual winding movement in the future.
Look at this movement carefully, we can find that the plate still similar to the previous style: like the ¾ plate design and use two plates one large and one small, covered most of the movement parts, then fixed by thick screws at the bottom plate, became a very strong structure. Further more, the movement surface adopted mattle-finish, the edge of every piece of plate has been chamfering processed. And Panerai special equipped rare large screws fine tunning balance wheel(13.2mm) for this movement, through its strong and power operation, provide accurate chrono results. The vibration frequency of balance wheel is 3Hz, Eequivalent to 21,600vph. there are four fine-tune screws around the balance wheel, via the turning screws to change the inertia of balance wheel, providing a more precise fine tuning speed effect, this is the future trends design of top-end movement. From the new launched P.3000 movement, we can see Panerai put its efforts on this movement, and a very complete functional planning.

Panerai Radiomir Tourbillon GMT P.2005
If the tourbillon invented by Abraham Louis Breguet in the end of the 18th century was an innovative product born for pocket watches, then the P.2005 movement that was launched by Panerai was the first revolutionary product born for wrist watches. The tourbillon structure of P.2005 movement got patent in Switzerland in 2005 and got American patent in 2006. The reason why it was approved wasn't the existed difference between it and the tourbillon of other brands, but was its original design intention - compltely for wrist watches, there were few people knew this thing: the object of designing P.2005 was to solve the position difference when the watch was being worn on wrist, its innovative mind was consistent with Abraham Louis Breguet's idea in developing tourbillon, they all wanted to make the watch work more precisely, only the watches in Mr. Breguet era were placed in pocket, and the watch in Panerai era were worn on wrist.
P.2005 tourbillon doesn't operate like traditional tourbillon, whose escapement, escapement wheel and balance wheel rotate together, but P.2005 doesn't work in this way, the relative position of its balance wheel, escapement and escapement wheel won't be changed, what will be changed over time is the relative position between the whole group of escapement and timing structure as well as the movement, so we call P.2005 vertical tourbillon structure, later some manufacturers launched similar products, but most were dual-axis tourbillon, maybe they had an increased technical appreciation value, but relatively had lower safety.
Panerai chose a practical design, if you have observed the most regular status of the watch, you will understand the original design intention of P.2005, the most common position of watch was naturally pendulous or placed falt on the deck, gravity is at right angles with the axis of the balance wheel in most cases, to balance out the gravity's impact on the movement, making the balance wheel is a good entry point. Certainly, appreciating its design concept is one thing, but you must know the tourbillon won't improve the accuracy of the watch to a large extent, just like a 8kt diamond, you can't take it to feed yourself, but we all know the value of the diamond.
Panerai Radiomir Tourbillon GMT PAM 316 is equipped with this movement, all elements of this watch maintain the high standards of Panerai, the watch is built with 950 platinum in case and folding buckle, reflecting specific Panerai style, the dial is amazingly simple, you can't see the tourbillon through the glass face, but there is an active blue dot indicator to indicate the tourbillon's position. Besides, it also has gmt and long-time power reserve functions.

Upcoming Panerai Time and Space Exhibition in Shanghai
To show the excellent tradition and history of its extraordinary fine watch-making technology, and in recognition of Galileo's achievements in science and technology, the Italian advanced watchmaker Panerai came back to its birthplace Florence and held an exhibition named "Time and Space: A Tribute to Galileo Galilei". The exhibition would be held in modern art center Ex3, date was between September 27 and October 2. In this exhibition, Panerai carefully selected the most representative watches and instruments from its HISTORIC and CONTEMPORARY series, three of them were produced to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Galileo's first astronomical discovery and the astronomy-related exhibits became the focus of this exhibition.
Exhibition was divided into three sections. The first section focused on history, the exhibits were selected from Panerai museum, mainly introduced on how Panerai developed from a workshop in Florence to a preferred supplier of the Italian Royal Navy, and provided sophisticated professional equipments for them. The second area was displaying the achievements which Panerai reached in the international market after being acquired by Richemont Group in 1997.
The newest type P.3000 manual winding movement developed by Panerai also first appeared in this exhibition. The third area was exclusively set to pay tribute to Galileo Galilei, to commemorate this creative genius who came from Italy and loved science very much. Panerai made three outstanding products with complicated functions in 2010: L'Astronomo (Luminor 1950 Equation of Time Tourbillon Titanium - 50mm), Lo Scienziato (Radiomir Tourbillon GMT Ceramic - 48mm) and Panerai Jupiterium.
This exhibition would be moved to Shanghai, China and held there in May 2011 for two weeks. At the appointed time, watch fans from China would have the chance to appreciate these special products (L'Astronomo, Lo Scienziato and Panerai Jupiterium) up close and experience the highest-level integration of Italian design and Swiss watch-making technology.
P.3000 was the movement that was entirely designed, developed and produced by Panerai factory, which was located in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. This manual winding movement shown the ultimate watch-making technology of Panerai, it was extremely outstanding in function, stability, accuracy and long-time power reserve. P.3000 movement was 5.3mm thick, had a diameter of 16½ lignes, was imitated from the size of Panerai's traditional movement. People who were familiar with watches wouldn't difficult to find that P.3000 had the similar structure with the 3/4-plate movement: a big bridge covered most surface of the movement and there was a small bridge beside, the bridges were fixed on the base with thick screws, formed a particularly strong structure. This 21-jeweled movement had two barrels, which was more convenient to use a longer barrel spring, so the intensity could be shared more evenly and making a longer operating hours, the movement therefore had a 3-day power reserve capacity. The balance wheel of the movement was large (13.2mm), it belonged to variable inertia, there were four screws outside the circle to be used as micro-adjusting device to correct the timing frequency. The balance wheel was supported by a bridge with two fixed ends, this design was more stable than the cantilevered single bridge, its vibration frequency was 21,600 times per hour. There was an Incabloc® shock absorber near the balance wheel, free-sprung hairspring.
Another two features of P.3000 movement were the polished bridges with rounded edges and the device for quickly adjusting the time: including the star wheel system with twelve adjusting points and a small spring clutch, which allowed the wearer to adjust the hour hand without affecting the activity of minute hand and the normal operation of the watch.

Panerai CEO Angelo Bonati: The Stage of P.9000
It was said that Panerai global CEO Angelo Bonati has always been very strict and serious, but this time I met him in Geneva and got a new feeling about this Italian gentleman that owned romantic factor.
From 5 to 1 - More Cautious Consumption
It was the first time that SIHH was held in winter, January, though so many people felt uncomfortable, Mr. Bonati shrugged and disagreed, because in the exhibition hall, you wouldn't feel the change of seasons and time, and such arrangement was more convenient to SIHH journalists guests, "come to Geneva at this time, we are very energetic, very willing to listen, but also have more time to enjoy the new watches. If, as in previous years, we first went to Basel, and then are heading toward SIHH, will be very tired, want to sleep, do not want to answer questions."
In addition to the time difference, the current global economic situation that SIHH faced was different from the past. As the exhibition and the brand's production were closely related to the economic situation, so the demand market of watches Panerai faced was also changed. Bonati told me that before people have always ordered five pieces of watches in order to get their favorite watches, but in fact they only needed one. This year, they only ordered one, or two, "the current economic situation, people become more cautious on consumption".
From an individual country in the consuming market today, the United States was the most important market for Panerai, next was its home country Italy, Hong Kong and Japan. From the regional perspective, Europe was clearly the most important for Panerai, followed by the Americas and India. Although some fluctuations in the economy, but the Panerai's global strategy would go on and no big changes accompanied by the economic situation, they got a lot of faith in the current market situation.
The Stage of P.9000
The origin of Panerai watch had a close link with the Italian Navy, in 1860, merchants, craftman and inventor Giovanni Panerai opened its first workshop in Florence. Soon, Panerai began to serve as the watch supplier of Italian Navy. Because navigation had a great demand for watches, so in a very long time, Panerai didn't sell watches to the public, until 1993, Panerai first introduced three limited edition watches to the public.
The real reason that made the public begin to fall in love with Panerai was not the watch itself, but because of a movie. In the 20th century, Panerai watch appeared in a Hollywood movie, which was acted by Sylvester Stallone, "In that movie, the watch is placed on his desk", Bonati said proudly, "This movid makes a lot of people, especially the movie fans start to like Panerai".
Panerai was going to meet its 150-year-old birthday, the target for Panerai in 2009 was to launch a new movement that was completely designed and produced by themselves, Bonati said: "Movement technology is very important for Panerai", while the SIHH that was held at the beginning of the year was a world stage for Panerai to show movement masterpiece. As a result, the year 2009 would also become an important turning point in Panerai history. In Panerai Manifattura series, in addition to previous models, three new P.9000 series movements were added - P .9000, P.9001 and P.9002, within a short span of seven years, Panerai published eight self-made movements with excellent operability and usability.
With the development of self-made P.9000 series, and the halo that has ever worked with the Italian Royal Navy to provide them with military watches, the Italian manufacturer Panerai has successfully ranked among the few advanced watch-making factories that were able to design and produce movements by themselves.
Future Ambition
It was the first time for me to come to Geneva in January, where it was warmer than expected, even several degrees higher than Beijing, but it was said that before we arrived, here was snow all over the sky. Mr. Bonati said with a smile: "In the past, people may come to SIHH while wearing T-shirts, now you can come here to watch the snow in Switzerland."
The headquarters of Panerai was located in Milan, but Mr. Bonati often commuted between Italy and Switzerland, he joked: "I often ride a bicycle on the road between Italy and Switzerland. " Like many Europeans, he liked skiing in the winter, but "will not always go skiing, "falling on skis will affect the work, work is very important, haha" he laughed. In winter, what made Mr. Bonati feel warmest was his family, the appreciation from friends and work achievements.
In the temporary office of Bonati, we saw many yachts pictures on the wall, Panerai has sponsored Classic Yachts Challenge in the Mediterranean for many years, and was the designated timers of many yachts events, Bonati was naturally a yacht fan, in front of those yachts that were abot to set sail, his clenched fist was a manifestation of his ambition.

Panerai Luminor Sealand Jules Verne
Limited to 100 pieces, to commemorate 100 years of the death of Jules Verne, took Nautilus to start out.
In the well-known literary work Around the World in Eighty Days, Jules Verne mentioned watches almost 30 times. In fact, it was the first time that the watch appeared as the role of literary hero. If calculated accurately, this novel used the word "hours" for 243 times, "minutes" for 51 times and "seconds" for 12 times. In 1884, after Around the World in Eighty Days being published for a decade, people re-organized the plot of the book according to time zone and the regional time difference in the stories, making Around the World in Eighty Days become a literary work that was mostly related to watches in Extraordinary Journeys series of Jules Verne. It was curious that, in a Jules Verne's book in 1871 - Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, there was no citation about watches. It was generally believed that even though there was very strong premonition, it never occurred to Jules Verne that the world first nuclear-powered submarine Nautilus would complete the first Arctic voyage in human history after the book was published less than a century. In particular, the ship Nautilus was adopted from the name of a submarine(belonged to Captain Nemo) in the book.
One might ask: During those days, if Jules Verne had a Panerai watch that was used by Italian Royal Navy in the mid-30s, would not even open his imagination?
Jules Verne, the creator of virtual world and wrote many adventure literature, died 100 years ago, and the year 2005 was called "Year of Jules Verne". To commemorate its Extraordinary Journeys, Panerai launched Luminor Sealand Jules Verne Limited Edition watch, which was limited to 100 pieces. The Luminor Sealand Jules Verne Limited Edition was a watch that was specially made to commemorate this great writer and his novels that were full of imagination. In his writings, Jules Verne has vividly described the sci-fi world (at least according to his knowledge at that time). The crafty plot arrangements in Extraordinary Journeys liked those mechanical watches of many watch legends, affecting many generations of dreams and emotions. As the ancestor of diving watch, Panerai had the obligation to make a extraordinary watch to commemorate Jules Verne.
The hand-carved steel cover of Luminor Sealand Jules Verne was especially unique. The image on the cover imitated from an ikon of Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea, this ikon was drawn by Alphonse de Neuville and sketched the appearance of Captain Nemo using the sextant on Nautilus. It was worth mentioning that all ikons of Captain Nemo in this novel was actually the publisher Jules Hetzel, the friend of Jules Verne. The engraving on the cover of Luminor Sealand Jules Verne clearly demonstrated the renal spirit of original painting. The strong case, crown guard and cover of Panerai watch were exquisite and perfectly made, echoing with the highly innovative and aesthetic Nautilus submarine in the book. The image on the cover that was selected by Luminor Sealand Jules Verne also shown the importance of the navigation timer. Not only navigation timer must be absolutely accurate, but also had to overcome all the difficult environment of navigation. The famous Marine Chronometers allowed sailors to take the date out of the sextant to calculate their exact location in the ocean.
Coincidentally, Albert Einstein also published the Special Theory of Relativity a hundred years ago, later came out the General Theory of Relativity. Einstein made people get a revolutionized understanding of space, time and physical movement, and because of this, the evolving of some treacherous journeys was possible. Under the possibility in some time, in the universe somewhere, Captain Nemo was standing on Nautilus that was tied to the Eiffel Tower while wearing a Panerai watch. What better navigation watch that could help him realize his dream?
Luminor Sealand Jules Verne was 100 limited worldwide, only sold by the Panerai boutiques. Five boutiques of Panerai around the world distributed as follows:
Shanghai, China: Plaza 66
Hong Kong: Prince Building
Florence, Italy: Palazzo Arcivescovile
Italy Portofino
Los Angeles, the United States: Beverly Hills
